The Reality Check Workbook

A structured way to examine what happened without being told what to conclude.

When your confidence in your own perception has been repeatedly challenged, even simple questions can become difficult.

Did that really happen?

Am I remembering it correctly?

Am I overreacting?

Is this a pattern, or am I connecting things that do not belong together?

The Reality Check Workbook creates a structured place to examine those questions without assuming the answer.

Rather than asking you to decide whether another person is abusive, manipulative, narcissistic, or anything else, the workbook helps you organize what you observed, distinguish facts from interpretation, examine patterns over time, consider competing explanations, and identify what information would genuinely change your understanding.

Inside the workbook

The Four-Layer Reality Check

Separate what you directly observed from the meaning you assigned to it, the emotions it produced, and the larger narrative that may have developed around it.

Pattern Log

Compare repeated incidents without forcing unrelated experiences into a single explanation.

What Would Change My Mind?

Identify evidence that could support, weaken, or change your current interpretation.

Independent Confirmation

Examine what happens when you seek outside perspective, including whether outside confirmation itself becomes a source of conflict.

Credibility Attack Tracker

Track recurring challenges to your memory, judgment, emotional state, treatment, medication, stress level, alcohol use, or other factors used to undermine confidence in your account.

The Red-Line Inquiry

Identify disagreements that remain possible to discuss and those where questioning the other person’s version becomes unsafe, punishing, or prohibitively expensive.

The Reality-Maintenance Burden

Examine how much work you are doing simply to preserve confidence in your own understanding of events.

A healthy relationship should not require you to take notes simply to preserve your confidence in what happened.

Uncertainty Map

Separate what is known, likely, uncertain, and genuinely disputed.

Choose the Next Horizon

Identify what information or support would be most useful next without forcing a decision before you are ready.

One-Page Reality Check

A reusable worksheet for future situations.

What this workbook will not do

It will not diagnose another person.

It will not determine whether you are being abused.

It will not tell you whether to stay, leave, confront someone, report something, or take legal action.

Its purpose is narrower: to give your thinking somewhere stable to land.
