Toolbox Concept

Delayed Cost of Survival

Delayed Cost of Survival is the phenomenon in which exhaustion, anxiety, grief, cognitive difficulties, or reduced functioning become fully apparent only after leaving an agency-eroding environment.

The apparent decline does not necessarily indicate that the person is becoming less healthy. Instead, it often reflects the accumulated cost of adaptations that were necessary to survive.
